I love Doom 3, but apparently I'm in the minority. In fact, my brother and I had a server up pretty much all weekend. There were no shortages of people joining in either. If one person left, another would join.

(maybe that just means there aren't enough servers, but I think people are playing it) For simple deathmatching it's really quite fun. It reminds me of when I used to play the original over serial link and IPX networks. It was fun then, and it's still fun now.

I don't know why people can't have fun with simple mechanics. It's all in what you expect to get out of it.

If you want a basic deathmatch with a few people, then Doom 3 is quite nice. You want a billion people at once and a little more strategy, play BF2 or UT2004. I've been rotating between Quake, Quake 3, Quake 4, Doom 3, F.E.A.R.

Combat, and BF2. I don't really expect any of these to fill in for the others either. I play each one for a different reason. When I need to give my reflexes a bit of a rest from Quaking, and need to strategize for a while, I'll play BF2. Similar thing for every game I play.
If it does what it does well, then I play it when I'm in the mood for that.Anyway, enjoy D3, it's a lot better than people give it credit for. (though I did tweak the weapon defs a little to bring their effect/damage/etc. More in line with the original). Ah, Doom 3.Beyond the single player faults, the main issue with multiplayer is that it's trying to be a 'back to basics' deathmatch style game, but it's too slow to do that effectively. Even when running, the game is like playing Q3A underwater.
It's just too slow. The lighting and 'mood' are lost in multiplayer, so what you're left with is an engine designed for slow and deliberate actions trying to accomodate a style of play that isn't.Compare it to old school Doom, the first 3 Quake games, the UT games, or pretty much any other game, your walking speed is about 1/3 of what it should be.Even if you like the engine - Quake 4 and Prey are a little better. Both involve horribly slow movement, too.but at least the weaponry is better designed for VS. Play. It's one of the best examples of what id had an issue with years ago. They claimed they couldn't make a good single player game that had multiplayer and vice versa anymore.
Q3A and Doom3 are evidence of that. They haven't been able to pull it off since Quake 2.nor have they really even tried.
